The first is a visually-stunning news story. In a day when most of the graphics in a story are a single medium shot at the top and maybe a small one inline, the New York Times’ Snow Fall: The Avalance at Tunnel Creek by John Branch should be given an award (if it hasn’t, else more awards). This sort of thing can easily be overdone, for sure. Probably, it was expensive to produce.  But if you have a REALLY big story, this is a REALLY big way of telling it.
